Drone Racing

Interested in drone racing, but don't know what it is? Drone racing is a new sport where pilots fly customized drones in competition with one another. These drones are made to be fast, agile and more maneuverable than the regular mini-drones. It doesn't matter if you're a racing drone pilot or simply watching one, the true pleasure is in experiencing the neck-breaking speed and agility of the drones through immersive virtual reality style goggles. This is called FPV (First Person View).

What You Should Know About FPV Drone Racing

FPV drone racing involves the use of video goggles connected wirelessly to the drone. It became an amateur sport in Australia, and has since burgeoned into having its own league: The Drone Racing League (DRL). The league plans to be the next Formula 1, MotoGP and NASCAR of drone racing. DRL recently got financial backing from venture capitalists and celebrities to make its dream a reality.

FPV flying was initially done using RC Planes, but these days, multi-rotor drones have become the preferred UAV. This is because it is much more stable, easier to fly, and quicker than RC planes. All of these advantages make multi-rotor drones the perfect choice for drone racing. From late 2013 to 2015, FPV drones were made even smaller. This made them even more maneuverable than before while also being portable enough to fit through tighter spaces.

How Can I Become a Drone Racer

You can buy a ready-to-use racing drone or build one yourself. To build a custom drone, you will need to buy all of the right components or a drone racing kit. This includes a racing drone, a video receiver, batteries, a battery charger, FPV goggles, a good controller plus a few other miscellanies items. You should get help if you are not a DIY junky as your racing drone will need a lot of work before and after each race.

The ideal racing drone will be a custom-built UAV with standard-definition cameras for a live feed and equipped with an HD camera for better video quality. The drone should be outfitted with colored LED lights, to make it easy to spot when it's moving really fast.

The Drone Racing League (DRL)

Every sport needs rules and regulations and the DRL is currently trying to create a structure for drone racing. The league is building drones for each pilot instead of having them supply their own. While most sports leagues don't provide sporting tools for their participants, they do have stringent rules. Just like the highly-regulated Formula One, the DRL has many stipulations on things like the types of drones for use, etc. This is intended to help level the playing field, making sure that no racer has a technical advantage over others.

The future of drone racing is still blurry, but from the speed of progression so far it is looking good. Whether or not the DRL will be the one to establish the sport's credibility is also left to be seen. But with first-person drone videos stacking up millions of views online, it's not impossible to imagine how huge this sport will become in the next few years.
